Year 6 Curriculum Letter

Welcome Back

We would like to welcome you all to Year 6 and we hope you had a delightful Christmas! Each term, you will receive information about all the wonderful things your child will be learning so that when you ask your child the age-old question – ‘What did you do in school today?’ – you will already know the answer! We have such an exciting curriculum planned and we can’t wait to get started.

Music—Pop Art

Pupils will be discussing musical eras in context, identifying how they have influenced each other, and discussing the impact of different composers on the development of musical style

Key Vocabulary: variations, rhythmic elements, percussion, motif, pulse, tempo

History—World War Two

This term in history, we will be learning about the fascinating topic of World War Two! As the topic is so vast, we will be focusing on a few key events:

What was the greatest triumph? Dunkirk or D-Day?
What was Bideford like in the war?
What was life like on the home front?
Did everyone have a vital role?
What was D-Day important?

D&T—Structures

This term in D&T we will be learning which shapes and techniques build the strongest frame structures!

Key Vocabulary: stiffen, strengthen, reinforce, triangulation, stability, purpose

Art—Sculpture

In this pathway we will explore furniture design that is full of personality and character.

Taking inspiration from artists such as Yinka Ilori using their creativity and imagination.

Key Vocabulary: design through making, 3D doodle, personality, character, materials, form, function

Geography—How has Bideford Changed Over Time?

This term in Geography, we will be looking at how Bideford High street is changing. We will be studying local businesses and collecting data on occupancy rates. Map work will play a large part as will primary research and fieldwork. Towards the end we will be making proposals on how we can improve the town centre and its economy

Key Vocabulary: settlement, population, economy, landmark, grid reference, central business district, terrain, accessibility, vacant, occupancy.

PE

This term in PE, we will be covering the following sports:

Athletics and will be focusing on developing our stamina and athletic skills
Netball where we will be building on our invasion skills from the Autumn term, focusing on attacking and defending effectively.

RE—Incarnation

In RE, pupils will explore why Christians believe that Jesus was the Messiah. Children will learn how incarnation fits within the big story of the bible.

Key Vocabulary: Messiah, Incarnation, saviour, prophecy, gospel, theological

Science—Living Things and Their Habitats

Pupils will explore the wonders of the natural world . They will describe how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics and based on similarities and differences, including micro-organisms, plants and animals and give reasons for classifying plants and animals based on specific characteristics

Key Vocabulary: Classification, characteristic, vertebrates, invertebrates, micro-organisms, bacteria, virus, fungi, taxonomy, Carl Linnaeus

Homework

To support your child with their learning in year 6, will be sending home a sheet of maths home-work each week. This will be linked to what they have recently done in class or if we have identified a particular gap.

They also are expected to read at home each day for at least 10 minutes either independently or with an adult. Don’t forget to sign their reading record so they can get a Bookflix Stamp!

Additionally, we may send home individualized work to support specific areas to target.
