Year 1 Spring term
Welcome Back
We hope you had an enjoyable and festive Christmas break. We are looking forward to another exciting term. We have a fantastic curriculum across the school and we can’t wait to get started for our Spring term.
Music—musical vocabulary
This term in Music, our project will be exploring musical vocabulary. The children will be learning about a range of different musical elements such as tempo, timbre, pulse and rhythm. We will be exploring this through our voices and on different instruments.
Key Vocabulary: pulse, rhythm, timbre, texture, tempo, pitch.
History—Aeroplanes
This term in history, we will be learning about how aeroplanes have changed over time.
  • What are aeroplanes?
  • Who invented the hot air balloon? What are they used for today?
  • Why did aviation change?
  • Who can go on aeroplanes today? Why do we use them?
Key Vocabulary: aeroplane, aviation, transport, change, past, present, wealthy.
D&T— free-standing structures.
This term in D&T we will be learning about free-standing structures to design and make our own playground equipment out of recycled materials.
Key Vocabulary: Stable, fixed, unstable, strong, weak.
Art— water colours, inspired by flora & fauna
In Art this term, we will be exploring watercolours and brush techniques. We will be using inspiration from the flora & fauna around us to create our end piece of art to display in our art gallery.
Key Vocabulary: Flora, fauna, technique, water colour
Geography—What makes up the Earth?
This term in Geography, we will naming and locating the world’s seven continents and five oceans. Our key questions will be:
  • Are all continents and oceans the same?
  • How does a globe differ from an atlas?
  • What landmarks will you find where?
Key Vocabulary: continents, oceans, landmarks, globe, atlas
PE
This term in PE, we will be covering the following sports to develop our strength, flexibility and team work skills:

Spring 1:
  • Sea Dragons– swimming and gymnastics.
  • Clownfish– gymnastics and bench ball.
RE— Celebrations
This term in RE we will be learning about Judaism. We will be looking at: stories from the Torah, celebrations and special prayers.
Key Vocabulary: Judaism, Mezuzah, Torah, Rosh Hashanah, Passover
Science—materials and seasonal changes
This term in Science, our first topic will be everyday materials. They will learn about the fascinating science behind materials and their different properties.
  • What are everyday materials?
  • How do their properties differ?
  • Why can the same object be made from different materials?
Key Vocabulary: metal, plastic, fabric, rubber, rock, glass.

Our second topic will be seasonal changes and understanding how our seasons change. They will learn about the fascinating science behind how the seasons change and take a walk in the woodland clinic to look for signs of spring.

  • What are features of spring?
  • How does the weather change in spring?
  • What features can we spot in the forest?

Trips:
If you would like to join us for any of our trips, please talk to the class teacher. We really appreciate you giving up your time to come with us and the children really enjoy having you join us on our trips.
Homework
To support your child with their RWI and maths fluency we will be sending QR codes and maths sheets home every Friday.

We would love for you to read with your child every day. This could be sharing a book together, listening to your child read or reading to your child. We would like reading at home to be an enjoyable and shared experience.
