Welcome to Autumn 1. Here you will find all the Year 5 key information and dates for this half term.

Important Dates

  • Welcome back to school! — Welcome to the 2026–27 school year! We look forward to welcoming everyone back. School starts at 8:40am.
  • After school clubs to begin. — After school clubs begin this week.
  • Youth Engagement Visit - Criminal Responsibility — Year 5 will be visited by a member of the police who will talk to them about being responsible, making positive choices and being good citizens. This will provide an opportunity for the children to discuss how their choices and actions can affect themselves and others.
  • Appledore Book Festival — We are excited to welcome award-winning author Guy Bass to our school! He will be sharing his experiences as an author, talking about his books and inspiring the children to develop their own love of reading and writing.
  • Bikeability — We are pleased to offer the children the opportunity to take part in Bikeability training. The sessions will develop their cycling skills, confidence and awareness, helping them to become safer and more responsible cyclists. The training will cover Level 1 and Level 2, including bike handling, road awareness, making safe decisions and understanding how to respond to other road users. Bikeability will take place over a two-week period, allowing as many children as possible to participate and benefit from this valuable experience.
  • Open Classroom — Parents are invited to join their children in the classroom to read and celebrate the amazing stories they have written, inspired by The Chronicles of Narnia. It will be a lovely opportunity for the children to share their creativity and be proud of their fantastic writing!
  • Tempest Individual Photos — Children will need to wear their full school inform for their photos, including a school jumper.
  • RSE - Puberty — During this session, the children will learn about the physical changes that happen during puberty. They will explore when and why puberty happens, learn about the different changes that can happen to our bodies, and develop an understanding of the scientific names for male and female body parts. The session will provide children with age-appropriate information to help them understand and prepare for the changes that happen as they grow and develop.
  • KS2 Halloween Discos — Save the date for our KS2 Halloween Disco! More information will be sent out closer to the event.
  • KS1 Halloween Discos — Save the date for our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 Halloween Disco! More information will be sent out closer to the event.
  • Science Day — A whole-school day of exciting science activities, investigations and hands-on learning for every year group.

Little People, Big Dreams - Emmeline Pankhurst by Lisbeth Kaiser

We will be reading Little People, Big Dreams: Emmeline Pankhurst to learn about an important figure in British history and her role in the fight for women’s right to vote.

Through Emmeline’s story, the children will explore ideas of fairness, equality, courage and perseverance, while learning how people can stand up for what they believe in and help create positive change.

The book will also encourage the children to think about how society has changed over time and how their own voices and actions can make a difference.

A Series of Unfortunate Events follows the three Baudelaire siblings — Violet, Klaus and Sunny — after they are orphaned when their home is destroyed by a mysterious fire. They are sent to live with their distant relative, Count Olaf, who wants to steal their fortune. The children use their different talents and intelligence to escape his plans, but Olaf continues to follow them as they move between different guardians and face a series of unfortunate events.

PE Information

PE Days: Tuesday and Thursday

We ask for PE kits to be in school every day so that if changes need to be made to the timetable children have this available to them. This term, we have a variation of indoor and outdoor PE sessions. If you have any questions, please feel free to speak to your child’s class teacher or contact the school office.
